RIVERTON, Utah — On Friday more Utah cities declared either a full ban on fireworks or announced there was no safe place to set fireworks off, a day after Gov. Spencer Cox used an executive order to temporarily restrict fireworks statewide.
Ordinarily, Utah state code says only the legislature can enact a full fireworks ban in incorporated areas, such as a city. But the governor’s order on Thursday, under the state’s Emergency Management Act, temporarily suspended those rules.
Extreme conditions spur ban on fireworks
Gusty winds stirred up dust and brought smoke and ash back to the Salt Lake Valley from fires to the south on Friday, highlighting the extreme conditions that led the National Weather Service to issue Utah’s first Particularly Dangerous Situation or PDS Red Flag Warning.” That warning will remain in place until midnight Friday night.
A PDS Red Flag Warning is in effect Friday from 9 AM to midnight for portions of the Southwest Desert, Central & Southern Mountains including the #CottonwoodFire. This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. Gusty winds & dry conditions will lead to very rapid fire growth. #utwx pic.twitter.com/AExO4hCYdG
