Utah Highway Patrol plans to crack down on excessive speeding

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol announced Wednesday it will be taking further action to crack down on excessive speeding.

Lt. Jalaine Hawkes, of the UHP, says extra Troopers will be on the roads to help with what has been an ongoing problem around the state in recent months.

“We have seen numerous situations just in the past month,” she said. “Where someone was stopped for a high rate of speed, over 100 miles per hour. And then is stopped a very short time later at the same high speed.”

With the upcoming Pioneer Day holiday, Hawkes says the extra Troopers will also be on the highways to help make sure everyone stays safe.

“We’re out here. We have extra shifts,” she said. “We are absolutely pursuing anyone who is violating those key areas. Impaired driving is right up there with it. We will absolutely be coming for you to make sure our message is getting home.”

The UHP says it will be adding an extra 200 shifts over the course of the next three weeks.
