SALT LAKE CITY — A missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Utah has died after getting hit by a car in North Carolina, officials confirmed.
Elder Aleki Langi, 18, died Thursday after a car lost control and veered onto the sidewalk, hitting Langi and another missionary, church spokesman Sam Penrod said in a statement.
The other missionary sustained minor injuries and has been released from the hospital, while a third missionary was not hurt, Penrod added.
Langi is from Magna, according to the church, and was serving in the faith’s North Carolina Charlotte Mission while awaiting a visa to go to Jamaica.
“We extend our deepest condolences and love to Elder Langi’s family, friends, and fellow missionaries during this difficult time,” Penrod said. “We pray that they will each feel the Savior’s comfort and peace as they mourn his passing and honor his dedicated missionary service.”
The local NBC affiliate, WCNC, reported that witnesses said the car involved was “speeding extremely fast.”
A Charlotte nonprofit organization, Quality Comprehensive Health Center – which is located near where the incident occurred – posted about it on Facebook Friday morning.
“Our hearts aches for the family of the young man who lost his life—he was a dedicated missionary for The Church of Latter-day Saints, and we can’t even begin to imagine the pain they’re feeling right now,” the organization said. “We are also deeply proud of our Prevention Director, Craymon Garner, who did everything in his power to help, including performing CPR in a desperate attempt to save him. In times like this, we are reminded of the importance of community and compassion.”
