SALT LAKE CITY — A new survey ranked Utah as the fifth safest state in the country.
The new study by WalletHub ranked Utah number one in workplace safety, one of 52 factors in the survey.
Utah Labor Commission spokesman Eric Olsen said it’s gratifying.
“With our interactions with different companies and organizations in this state, it’s not surprising that we would see some sort of recognition for our state like that,” he said. “We see a lot of effort being made by Utah companies to prioritize safety.”
He said the commission inspects companies that ask for an evaluation.
“Something where we come looking for (is), ‘hey, this might be a safety issue. That might be a safety issue,” he said. “Here’s how you fix those so that you don’t get that other kind of visit at another time.”
Overall, Utah was fourth for emergency preparedness and seventh for road safety. The state followed the eastern states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts in the survey.
