Volunteers wanted for Salt Lake Temple open house in 2027

SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is looking for about 30,000 volunteers to help welcome visitors to the Salt Lake Temple once the public open house begins in April, 2027.

“The celebration is not your grandma’s open house, we are so excited to welcome millions of people,” said Jennifer Allen, Senior Event Manager for the Salt Lake Temple Celebration and Volunteer applicants. “This event is going to be unprecedented, unlike anything the church has ever done before.”

Allen said they’re looking for volunteers for a variety of roles to help welcome people to Temple Square during the Salt Lake Temple open house from April 5 to October 1, 2027.

Many ways to volunteer

Those roles can include greeting and answering visitors’ questions, answering phone calls and emails and helping with guided tours. The church is also looking for people and groups who wish to showcase their musical or art skills for visitors to enjoy as they come to see the renovated temple.

Blake Barnes was one of the first people to apply as a volunteer after the church opened up applications Monday. He told KSL he hopes to be a tour guide.

“You play such a small role in something so big, and it’s just humbling to know you can be a part of it,” he said.

The Salt Lake Temple was originally dedicated in 1893 making it one of the oldest of the church’s 385 temples that have been dedicated, announced or are under construction.

The Salt Lake Temple has been closed for renovations since December 29, 2019. Church leaders have not yet announced the date it’ll be rededicated.
