SALT LAKE CITY — A semi carrying a tank trailer left a trail of destruction Monday morning after it left the roadway, crashing into several cars, utilities, and ending up in a Wellington home.

Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol said at approximately 6:20 a.m., the semi was traveling eastbound on state Route 6 when it left the roadway.

Roden said the semi collided with six vehicles parked at an auto repair facility and continued through an intersection, crashing into a utility pole, a fire hydrant, fencing, and an open field.

Those six vehicles were parked in Randy Thayne’s repair shop. He told KSL TV that some of them would be tough to replace, but that’s the least damage left by the semi.

According to UHP, the semi finally came to rest after crashing into a home.

“I looked out the front door, and I saw the truck in the house,” Thayne said, who is a neighbour of the home impacted by the semi. “At first I thought, it might have been thunder. Especially when the power flickered.”

An elderly couple in the home were struck by the semi and were transported to a hospital by medical helicopter. Roden did not say the severity of the couple’s injuries.

Thayne said he was one of the first of the bystanders who ran to help the occupants of the home and the semi.

“We started pulling, wood and blocks out of there, trying to, get to Paula in there to get her out and help her,” Thayne said.

Roden said two occupants inside the semi were also transported to the hospital with minor to serious injuries.

According to Roden, a 12-year-old boy was sleeping inside the front room of the home but was uninjured. The boy was also transported to the hospital.

About 10,000 gallons of crude oil had to be drained and hauled off before the semi could be moved, according to UHP’s Lt. Evan Kirby.

“Luckily, nothing caught fire, which would’ve made this drastically worse,” Kirby said.

UHP is looking into several factors that led to this crash, from drowsy driving to brakes not working.

“Part of our investigation is starting to show that maybe drowsy driving was a factor in this crash. And as we go into 100 deadliest days, it’s really important to remember, you know, things like getting well rested before long trips,” Kirby said.
