Utah teacher working to help international student stay in the US

WEST JORDAN, Utah — A West Jordan High School teacher is asking for help to raise money to keep an international student from returning to Denmark.
The teacher, Robyn Briggs, said the student, Mille Moeller, would be returning to an abusive home.

Moeller wants to stay in the United States and finish her senior year of high school at West Jordan High.
It cost around $15,000 for Moeller to get to the U.S. She said she raised that money by working three jobs.
Planning a future at West Jordan High
Briggs works as an art teacher and runs a suicide prevention program for West Jordan High. She said she has been working with Moeller, trying to help her come to terms with a traumatic past.
“She came to me, and, she was bawling,” Briggs said. “She’s planning on taking my class next year, which is ‘Sources of Strength.’ It’s a suicide prevention class, a peer leadership program.”
Moeller had learned she would need to raise more money to stay in the U.S. longer.
Briggs started a GoFundMe account to help pay the $9,000 Moeller needs to stay in the United States.
“The reason I have to pay this much money this time around is because I’m a non-immigrant. And it’s the laws of the United States that if you’re attending in public high school, you have to pay a fee, which normal citizens would do through taxes,” Moeller said.
Mille said she has found refuge and a new family at West Jordan High. She hopes she can stay for good.
“She’ll be able to do all the things that come with the American dream of high school, right? I want that for her,” Briggs said.
