White Sage Fire rapidly growing near Grand Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY – The White Sage Fire near the Utah-Arizona border has burned nearly 50,000 acres, fire officials said Monday.
The fire is located approximately 15 miles southwest of Fredonia, Arizona, near the north rim of the Grand Canyon, according to a joint release from the Forest Service Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management and the Interagency Incident Management Team.
As of Monday morning, the White Sage Fire has burned 49,286 acres.
The fire remained at 0% containment.

Fire officials said 467 people are on scene to help fight the fire. On Sunday, aerial crews dropped 179,597 gallons of retardant on the White Sage Fire.
Officials said the fire’s west side is “holding well,” but weather conditions were challenging firefighting efforts.
Evacuations around the area are in place as crews work to contain the fire.
