SALT LAKE CITY — Less than one year from today, you’ll need to make sure your driver’s license has a gold star on it if you want to get on an airplane.

All that means is you need a RealID if you’re older than 18 years old. That’ll be important for any prospective missionary, or new college student headed off to another state and wants to get home for Thanksgiving.

Federal law requires documents that prove identity when the license is issued, and most people have been getting them when they renew.

Without the RealID compliant license, you won’t be able to board a commercial flight as of May 3rd, 2023. The original deadline was back in 2020 but was extended because of the pandemic.

The RealID standard was put in place after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

There’s more information on the Driver License Division website.
