ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel to Canyon Junction road will be closed for three weeks beginning April 9th.

This is to fix the road and rebuild a retaining wall below the highway as well.

The road was severely undercut due to a storm last month. Only one lane has been allowed to remain open. Officials say the east side will be limited to vehicles smaller than 7 feet, 10 inches wide and 11 feet, 4 inches in height. This will be between the East Entrance and the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel.

“Alternate east and west driving routes are available via Highway 59 from Hurricane, Utah to Fredonia, Arizona and Highway 14 from Cedar City, Utah to Long Valley Junction and Highway 89,” Zion National Park said in a statement. “People coming from Interstate 15 to the Park may access the Park as usual by traveling east on State Route 9 through Springdale.”

In its statement the National Park confirmed from Oct. 1, 2018 to Mar. 31, 2019 Zion Canyon received over 15 inches of moisture. Just to compare, the previous year in the same span only had just under 4.5 inches.
