American Fork councilwoman Barbara Christiansen passes at age 74

SALT LAKE CITY — American Fork councilwoman and former reporter Barbara Christiansen has passed away at the age of 74.  A social media post on the American Fork City Facebook page alerted her constituents and friends on Friday to her death from ongoing health conditions.

“With great sadness, we announce the passing away of councilwoman Barbara Christiansen. In addition to living in AF [American Fork] for 43 years, she also reported on AF topics for The Citizen and The Daily Herald. In all aspects of her life she was invested in our community. You will be missed,” noted the Facebook post.

She was a long-time resident of American Fork and was a member of the American Fork City council, where she took office in January 2018 on the promise of improving communication efforts in the city.  She helped those efforts by authoring a monthly report called “Citizens Want to Know.” As a reporter, she wrote about American Fork in The Citizen and The Daily Herald.

Christiansen was also credited for her work on the city’s rebranding, completion of a regional park, and infrastructure and zoning improvements.

“Barbara was a true friend to us and our city,” Mayor Brad Frost said. “Her wisdom and authentic concern for our community was always evident in her words and deeds.”

City Administrator David Bunker recalls her time as a reporter and council member as very productive. He said Christiansen participated in more city council meetings than any other person. 

According to the release, Christiansen is survived by her husband and four children. Funeral details have yet to be set.
