Spiral sculpture graces front of new courthouse in Provo

PROVO, Utah (AP) — A towering steel spiral structure that sits in front of the new state courthouse in Provo is the work of an Arizona artist who says he wanted a light and airy piece of art to contrast the courthouse.
The Daily Herald in Provo reports that sculptor Lyle London beat out about 300 artists to win the chance to make the sculpture using the $330,000 in state funding for the project. Every state building is required to use one percent of its budget on artwork for the site.
London calls the 35-foot-tall sculpture the “circling spire.” It is made of a collection of half-inch seamless plates that look like a spinning cyclone.
At night, the sculpture it is lit up in red, green and yellow by spotlights.
