SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Utah Rep Chris Stewart says he’s seen nothing to validate claims that President Trump’s telephone conversation with Ukraine’s president was motivated by the upcoming election.

Rep. Stewart, a Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, spoke on Fox News on Sunday.

“It comes down to one sentence,” said Stewart, “and when you read that in its entirety, it’s very clear. He doesn’t ever link it to military aid.”

Stewart also said he’s not concerned about the identity of the person who brought President Trump’s Ukraine conversation to the forefront.

“This person is going to come forward and say, ‘yep, the president had this phone call,’ and ‘yep, that’s the transcript.’ Stewart told Fox News.

“I mean, why should I care at all what’s his perspective or his opinion or his judgement of this transcript is?”

Democrats in the House of Representatives launched a formal impeachment inquiry of the president after he admitted asking the president of Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

Rep. Stewart’s ambivalence is in contrast to Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who said last week that the president’s appeal to China and Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden was wrong and appalling.

At this time, Ukrainian authorities have not found any wrongdoings by the Bidens.
