OGDEN, Utah — Weber State University confirmed its first case of COVID-19, reporting a student-athlete tested positive Friday and is currently self-isolating.

The university said it’s working with closely with health care professionals to ensure a quick recovery.

The student is an athlete on the track and field team and lives off campus. The individual had initial exposure from a friend who doesn’t attend WSU after classes were canceled March 13.

The student’s friend has also tested positive for COVID-19.

Before knowing of their friend’s diagnosis, the school reports the student had a one-time, limited exposure outside with a small group of other team members. The student-athlete has been social distancing since Monday, March 16.

Coaches and other members on the track and field team who had direct contact with the student were informed and are being asked to social distance and self-monitor.

How To Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus

COVID-19 coronavirus is transmitted from person to person. It is a virus that is similar to the common cold and the flu. So, to prevent it from spreading:

  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Don’t touch your face.
  • Keep children and those with compromised immune systems away from someone who is coughing or sneezing (in this instance, at least six feet)
  • If there is an outbreak near you, practice social distancing (stay at home, instead of going to the movies, sports events, or other activities.)
  • Get a flu shot.
