DRAPER, Utah — Draper Park Middle School is scheduled to close, transitioning to virtual classes for the next two weeks starting Tuesday. This comes after the school surpassed the 15 case threshold within two weeks prompting health officials to recommend a shutdown.

No classes were scheduled Friday, as it was labeled a “compensation day” following parent-teacher conferences. Teachers will spend Monday working to move classes online, which will start Tuesday.

In-person classes could return by Oct. 12 if cases within the school don’t rise.

“The pause in on-campus learning was determined to be in the best interest of students, families and staff,” the school said in a statement. “In the meantime, the building will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.”

The school will make arrangements to still provide grab-and-go meals for students despite the move to virtual learning.

The closure comes after the school reported 16 cases in the last two weeks — with 80 students and staff members under quarantine, according to the school district’s online dashboard.

The decision follows guidelines established by the Canyons School District Board of Education. Once a school reaches 15 cases, the district must discuss with local health officials to decide next steps, according to those guidelines.

Alta, Brighton and Corner Canyon high schools are also set to close over the next two weeks because of rising coronavirus cases among students.
