SPANISH FORK, Utah — The Spanish Fork Fire Department responded to a commercial fire at Maple Mountain High School Tuesday afternoon.

Fire personnel, say they received a call from the school at about 1:45 p.m. When fire crews arrived on scene, smoke was seen coming from the dust collector unit attached to the woodshop at the north end of the school.

Fire officials say that while the fire was contained to the dust collector unit, smoke spread throughout the northern end of the school.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire in 32 minutes, according to officials.

Damages are estimated to be at $50,000. Fire officials also say the fire was caused by welding being conducted to repair the hopper of the dust collector. That ignited material in the bottom of the hopper.

A firefighter was transported to an area hospital for treatment of a burn. However, he was later released, according to fire officials.

No other injuries were reported from the incident.

The Maple Mountain High School principal told authorities that because students evacuated so quickly, no one was exposed to the smoke.

Despite the fire, school will still be held Wednesday at Maple Mountain.
