Heat advisory in effect through Monday night for northern Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A heat advisory is in effect through Monday at midnight for much of northern Utah, issued by the National Weather Service on Friday. 

National Weather Service Meteorologist Hayden Mahan said highs on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday would meet or exceed 100 degrees each day in Salt Lake City. 

“The heat advisory is primarily for northern Utah, so lower elevation Wasatch Front, as well as the Uintah Basin and northwest Utah,” Mahan said, including the Cache Valley. 

Heat advisory means high nighttime lows

Worse, according to Mahan: overnight lows will not offer much in the way of relief. 

“The biggest thing is the lack of overnight cooling that’s caused us to issue the heat advisory,” Mahan said. “Our overnight temperatures won’t be cooling down very much — upper 60s to well into the 70s for a lot of locations.” 

In Salt Lake City, the forecast low is not expected to drop below 75 degrees until after Monday. 

“It’s just not normal summertime heat. This is kind of above normal, abnormal heat that people need to take seriously. So you definitely want to watch out for signs of heat exhaustion or stroke, wear light-colored clothing, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and staying out of the sun as much as you can,” Mahan said. 

In Salt Lake County, government officials have opened a series of cooling centers, Cool Zones, for residents to seek refuge from the heat, especially if their homes do not have air conditioning. They include multiple locations in Salt Lake City, including the main public library downtown.
