DRAPER, Utah — Officials at Draper Park Middle School said that a potentially dangerous situation was avoided on Tuesday after a student used the SafeUT mobile app.

A student used the app in order to alert officials about a weapon on campus, said Canyons School District representative Jeffrey Haney.

“As a result of the tip,” Haney said, “we were able to work with our School Resource Officer to immediately start an investigation and quickly contain any potential harm to the school.”

Officials removed the weapon from campus, Haney said.

A small group of students at Draper Park Middle School was “shown the weapon in private,” the letter said. However, Haney said officials don’t believe the student intended any harm.

Officials will not release disciplinary information about the student in question.  But “the matter is being handled swiftly and in accordance with District policy,” said the letter to parents.

The district said that Draper Police may conduct a separate investigation.

“Your student’s safety is our No. 1 concern,” the letter continued, “and we greatly appreciate the student who used SafeUT to bring this issue to our attention. We continue to encourage all students to say something if they see something.”

Concerned parents can call 801-826-6900. Or they can send an email to communications@canyonsdistrict.org with any questions.

The SafeUT mobile app offers a confidential tip line as well as an immediate connection to a crisis counselor. The app is free and available for download on Google Play and the Apple App store.
