A heart attack occurs every 40 seconds in America, and heart disease is the number one killer of men and women around the world. Therefore, it's quite possible that you or a loved one will witness a cardiovascular event one day and be called upon to preserve life. Use the heel of one hand and cover with the other. SALT LAKE CITY — Many of us can relate to the fear of not knowing what to do if you are near someone who needs emergency care. Today for our Be Ready Utah Coverage, KSL 5 TV’s Shara Park shares her experiences when her training has kicked in because of her CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training.

A couple of months ago, Shara said she was one of the first people to come upon a nine-vehicle crash during a snowstorm. Inside one of the crashed vehicles, a little girl was slumped over in her car seat. She wasn’t breathing.

Shara said she knew exactly what to do because her CPR training immediately kicked in.

“When I lifted her neck to get her airway going, she started gurgling and took a gasping breath of air. I held her there until medical could arrive,” she said. “This little girl Jax did pass away, and it was absolutely awful.”

Why you should have CPR training

At the girl’s funeral, the mother asked Shara if she was a nurse.

“I said, no, I’m trained in first aid and CPR. In my mind — even though this little girl passed away — I walked away knowing I did everything in my power possible to give her the best fighting chance, and her mom told me the same thing.”

Shara said she first wanted to know CPR when she became a mother.

“And then it was, I want to make sure I can help a neighbor’s kid,” Shara said. “[An emergency] can happen to any of us at any time.”

She encouraged listeners and readers to ask their company to host a CPR training.

“Take advantage of that. They come to you. You can do it right there in your work setting,” Shara said.

Be Ready Utah.gov has all of the information on how to register to take a CPR class,” Debbie Dujanovic said.
