SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County Council is approving a budget that includes a tax increase for the county library system.
Under the approved tax rate, the tax burden to support the library system would be about $30 a month on a home valued at $560,000.
According to Salt Lake County government, approximately 880,000 people live within the boundaries of the County Library system.
With population growth up about 13% over the last ten years, two out of three people in the county are active library card holders. This makes the county library system one of the busiest library systems in North America.
The additional funding will address inflation, support updates to the library system, and allow for modernization.
The County Library System is funded through property taxes paid by Salt Lake County residents who haven’t seen a library tax increase in ten years, according to a press release from Salt Lake County government.
