SALT LAKE CITY — Utah teachers could get a $6,000 raise in 2024 if Gov. Cox’s proposed 2024 budget is approved.

Utah Education Association President Renée Pinkney joins KSL NewsRadio’s Dave and Dujanovic to discuss what this potential raise means for teachers.

Pinkney says $6,000 is a great start for a raise in teacher’s pay.

“Student success is at the heart of everything we do,” she says. “We really appreciate the governor’s budget that’s recognizing the importance of having a highly qualified educator in a classroom on day one.”

With the potential raise, Pinkney says Gov. Cox recognizes teachers as the biggest factor in student success. She says the UEA applauds Cox’s intent to elevate the teaching profession.

Pinkney is hopeful that the raise will pass through Utah’s legislation.

“Of course, we have a lot of teachers who have been teaching, you know, [since] the beginning of the pandemic, during the height of the pandemic, and now they’re trying to pick up the pieces … and just trying to catch their breath,” she says. “I think this is an excellent way to recognize their hard work, and their dedication and commitment. We just, truly, appreciate the governor’s proposal.”

Dave & Dujanovic can be heard on weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
