CENTERVILLE, Utah — One man is dead after a hit-and-run in Centerville late Saturday night. According to police, the suspect involved in the case is also dead.
According to a press release, the Centerville Police Department responded to a vehicle vs bicycle collision at 11:18 p.m. Saturday.
The press release states that witnesses told police a white Toyota Tundra had hit 63-year-old cyclist Kevin Reed killing him. The Toyota then fled.
Information provided by witnesses led police to investigate 43-year-old Justin Dewayne Bennett at a West Bountiful home.
According to the press release, once police arrived at the residence, they noticed pieces of a vehicle on the ground outside the home. Eventually, the truck involved with the hit-and-run was located inside Bennett’s garage.
Following this, officers briefly spoke with Bennett outside the home. The press release states Bennett fled to inside of the home. Shortly after, police heard a single gunshot from inside. According to police there was no one else inside the residence at the time of incident.
After this, officers remained on the scene and a search warrant was completed. Once inside, officers found Bennett dead from “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
His death is being investigated jointly with the Centerville and West Bountiful departments, according to the press release. The hit-and-run is still under investigation.
