Provo airport will soon become international airport, mayor says

PROVO, Utah — Traveling internationally will be getting easier for Provo locals. Mayor Michelle Kaufusi announced the Provo Airport — which services commercial flights through Breeze Airways and Allegiant Air — would soon become an international airport.
In a Facebook post from the Stadium of Fire event, she stated, “Our Provo Airport is thriving, filled to capacity with eager airlines, and it won’t be long until it emerges as the Provo International Airport!”
The airport’s director confirmed with KSL TV Wednesday that his office is working with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to get ready for international flights.
“Both airlines have requested that we get ready for that, and so we’re in plans right now, already, expanding the terminal to accommodate international arrivals. It’s quite a process,” Brian Torgersen said.
“The international flight that seems to make the most sense is Mexico,” Torgersen said. “Allegiant’s filed for a joint venture opportunity with Viva Aerobus out of Mexico. They see Provo being a location that they would begin service to Mexico rather quickly.”
International flights from Provo are at least a year away, Torgersen said. Approval of the new routes also depends on Mexico’s civil aviation authority being upgraded to U.S. standards.
