SALT LAKE CITY — Back to school means back to the store for many families, but the long lists of school supplies can empty wallets.
With increasing prices in the state, some families have a hard time paying for the crayons, rulers and glue some teachers ask for. However, several Utah school districts have established foundations that provide new backpacks, clothes, food, and other supplies to children in need. This ensures these students can enjoy school and start learning instead of worrying.
Cassie Smith with Davis School District said if a family can’t afford the supplies, the district has a way to help.
“If there is a student at a school who doesn’t have what they need,” she said, “we encourage their parents to talk to either the school counselor or one of the school administrators because they can connect them with school supplies.”
She said no family should have to worry about buying crayons or pencils. So, foundations help ease the worry so children can have the best learning experience possible. Additionally, if parents are not able to afford supplies or collect them through foundations, Smith urged people not to stress.
“All supplies that are donated by parents to classrooms are just that: they are donations,” she said. “So they are optional. They are greatly appreciated, they go a long way to make sure that teachers and classrooms have everything they need.”
