Salt Lake City School District considering school closures

SALT LAKE CITY — As part of a Population and Boundary Study, the Salt Lake City School District plans to hold five public meetings. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The meetings will be about potential school closures, according to a press release from Salt Lake City School District. 

The school district has seen a decline in enrollment as well as staffing shortages.

According to a press release, the district is currently studying seven elementary schools for potential closure. Additionally, the remaining 20 district elementary schools are up for possible boundary changes.  

The meetings aim to share information with the community.

Meeting schedule

  • Tuesday, September 12, 6-8 p.m. at SLCSE-Bryant Middle School
  • Saturday, October 7, 9-11 a.m. at Glendale Middle School
  • Wednesday, October 18, 7-9 p.m. at Northwest Middle School
  • Saturday, October 21, 9-11 a.m. at Franklin Elementary (Conducted in SPANISH.)
  • Wednesday, October 25, 7-9 p.m. at Hillside Middle School

School closures 

According to the district website, elementary school enrollment had dropped by 30% in the last eight years. As of October 2022, student population dropped to 9,602 from 12,431 students in 2014. 

This district is considering closures of the following schools:  Emerson Elementary; Hawthorne Elementary
M. Lynn Bennion Elementary; Mary W. Jackson Elementary; Newman Elementary; Riley Elementary and Wasatch Elementary.

A timeline of the pending closures can be seen can be viewed by parents. Closures would begin in December 2023 or January 2024.
