KAMAS, Utah — An attempted traffic stop led to a fatal officer-involved shooting in Kamas, Utah, on Thursday afternoon.
A statement from the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy from the Summit County Sheriff’s office tried to stop a vehicle at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. The vehicle was reportedly registered to an adult male with an active no-bail warrant for his arrest. When the Summit County officer learned the driver was wanted on a felony warrant in Wasatch County, he tried to stop the vehicle.
But a pursuit ensued instead.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle in question crashed on Bench Creek Road in Wasatch County according to officials.
At that point according to the statement from Wasatch County, the driver got out of the vehicle and “advanced toward the deputy wielding a large blunt object.”
The deputy reportedly shot the suspect at that point. Despite life-saving measures reportedly administered by the deputy, by the time emergency responders arrived, the suspect had died of his injuries.
Due to the multiple agencies involved in this officer-involved critical incident, a multi-agency investigation led by the Utah Attorney General’s Office has begun.
