Save during the holidays by renting ‘gifts’ from neighbors

SALT LAKE CITY — Why buy a new item during the holidays when you can rent from a neighbor instead?
Jason Fairbourne, founder and CEO of Yoodlize, joined Dave and Debbie to speak about buying an experience instead of a new item, which, after the season, may end up unused in the garage.
Only about 70% of garage space in single-family homes is available for parking because the floor space is occupied by something other than a parked car,” according to a survey conducted earlier this year.
Yoodlize is a platform that pairs owners, who want to earn a little extra money on the side, with renters, who want to use an item they don’t own for a certain period.
Saving during the holidays
Fairbourne said Yoodlize has a plenitude of party equipment to rent, which can save a host money.
Dave took advantage of that. He wanted to throw a pizza party but didn’t want to buy a pizza oven, which can range in price from under $100 to more than $2,000. So instead the party host rented a pizza oven for the day and saved.
“If you’re throwing an event and you want some fancy plates and goblets . . . but you don’t want to go buy 100 nice crystal goblets, somebody in the community has those listed for rent . . . without having to own those,” Fairbourne said.
He recalled a user who sought to purchase an expensive gift for Christmas but didn’t have the money to buy it.
“We had a user report back to us about a year ago that somebody had rented their VR [virtual reality] headset and wrapped it up and gave it to their kids for Christmas because they were tight on money and weren’t able to afford gifts that year.”
