SANDY, Utah — A Smith’s grocery store in Sandy near 10300 South experienced a carbon monoxide scare on Sunday, making it the third incident at a business or church this winter.

A suspicious smell prompted the evacuation, and emergency crews quickly responded to investigate.

“If there are multiple of you suddenly having this onset of symptoms: Headache, nausea, having difficulty breathing, different things that come on suddenly, something’s going on there,” Unified Fire spokeswoman Kelly Bird said.

Fortunately, no one was reported to have fallen ill during this incident.

The root causes of these leaks are not often attributed to human error.

“Things wear out, you know, gas lines wear out, most of the time it’s not human error that does these things, a lot of times it’s wear and tear on fuel lines or a faulty device,” Bird said.
