SALT LAKE CITY — Ryan Smith, the owner of the Utah Jazz, recently asked sports fans to submit name suggestions for a potential Utah NHL team.
Smith posted the question on X. It is the Jazz owner’s latest move in his push to bring the National Hockey League to the Beehive State.
If an NHL team were to come to Utah, what should we name it?

The effort to get a Utah NHL team
Smith formally asked the NHL for an expansion into Utah in January. A press release read that Smith’s company, Smith Entertainment Group, “envisions a near future where the NHL will thrive in Utah.”
Additionally, it said that SEG is “100% focused on making this happen as soon as possible.”
The January request to the NHL wasn’t Smith’s first time showing interest in bringing a team to the Beehive State. Smith Entertainment Group has been talking about bringing a team to Utah since 2022.
Following Smith’s formal inquiry, some Utah lawmakers made efforts to secure funding for the construction of a hockey stadium.
During the 2024 legislative session, lawmakers voted to pass a bill that would provide funding for the new stadium.
