SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah is launching the U Service Corps program. This program will offer scholarship money to students for their community service.
A million dollars in scholarships will be offered to students who may not have qualified for scholarships based on their academic merits but are willing to work in the community.
“When you offer scholarships based on service, it opens up scholarships to a whole new group of students who we believe will benefit from both the service and the scholarship opportunity,” University of Utah President Taylor Randall said.
Starting in the fall 2024 semester, 200 students will be given the chance to perform 120 hours per semester of community service. The university says that will earn students $5,000 in scholarships and valuable career experience.
“People that are service-minded are incredible community members,” Randall said. “People that are service-minded think more broadly about the world and society. It gives them incredible opportunities to earn valuable work experience, particularly early on in their educational career. And of course, the big benefit is they’ll earn scholarship dollars for this.”
With the support of state, federal, and other sources, the University of Utah hopes to expand the program. Over the next three years, the university hopes to include 1,000 students doing more than 120,000 service hours a year.
