SALT LAKE CITY — Utah law enforcement agencies are cracking down on distracted driving.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, distracted driving has caused 943 crashes and two deaths so far this year. Last year, there were 84 deaths.
“It’s very common for motorists to be distracted by their cellphones, whether that’s texting and driving, placing phone calls, utilizing the phone for music,” said Maj. Steve Salas from the Utah Highway Patrol.
That is why there is a nationwide campaign to stop distracted driving called “Put Your Phone Away or Pay.”
In Utah, 44 law enforcement agencies will be putting in extra shifts so more officers can be out on the road through Sunday.
Fines for first-time offenders can start at $100. Law enforcement officers believe that is better than costing you a life.
