BRIAN HEAD, Utah — Brian Head Ski Resort announced it will be open for a “bonus weekend” of late-spring skiing on May 10, 11, and 12.

The Southern Utah resort was originally slated to close on May 5. However, the press release cited deep, late-season snow for the additional weekend of operation.

Brian Head’s website said that 63% of its terrain is currently open. The press release said that on Sunday, April 28, the resort had a “63-inch [snow] base with powder [and] packed powder conditions.”

A resort’s snow base refers to the depth of snow that has settled at a given resort, according to Ski.com. Additionally, the snow base is often measured at the base and summit for elevation-based comparison.

According to the press release, the Giant Steps Express lift will be spinning every day until May 5. It will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Giant Steps Lodge will offer food, beverages, equipment rentals, and lessons.

The resort will be closed from May 6 through May 9, per the press release. When Brian Head’s “bonus weekend” commences, Giant Steps Express will begin running again. Skiers and riders will be able to access terrain off the lift from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Are any other Utah ski resorts still open for late-spring skiing?

While temperatures warm up, the 2023-24 ski season has been winding down. A majority of Utah’s ski resorts have already ceased operations for the season.

However, some resorts are still open for late-spring skiing.

Solitude’s website said that the resort is offering “the longest season in Utah.” Daily operations will run until May 12.

Additionally, Solitude will host a closing day event. The Closing Day Retro Party will feature a last run at the top of Powderhorn at 4 p.m. Visitors are invited to take part in the final run of the season, where they will ski from the top of Powderhorn II to the Moonbeam Lodge.

Solitude has not announced any additional details for the event. The website says that “more details are coming soon.”

Snowbird will also be continuing operations into May. The resort has yet to announce an official closing date.

However, it should be noted that no beginner terrain will be open for the remainder of the season, according to the resort’s website.

On May 12, Snowbird will cease daily operations. It will remain open on weekends until at least Labor Day, according to the website.
