MIDWAY, Utah – The Soldier Hollow Classic Sheepdog Championship and Festival is 20 years old in 2024. This year the festival is at a new time, and features new events.
This year the event will be held over the Memorial Day weekend, May 24 through May 27. Organizers hope the change from Labor Day to Memorial Day weekend will bring cooler, more enjoyable weather for spectators and competitors.
The four-day event attracts over 13,000 fans annually, who gather to watch sheepdogs from around the world compete. The dogs are judged based on their ability to calmly maneuver sheep through different courses. Judges look at six categories: outrun, lift, fetch, shed, pen and double lift and international shed.
The festival also has many attractions, food, merchandise, educational demonstrations, kid activities and a beer garden hosted by Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation.
The Soldier Hollow Nordic Center, most known as a 2002 Olympic venue, has been the host of the Sheepdog Championship since 2003. Recent renovations to Soldier Hollow include larger spectator porches and additional lawn seating.
