Alpine, UTAH – The body of a 19-year-old Utah County woman who went missing Friday has been found.
Sgt. Spencer Cannon, with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said the woman went missing near Horsetail Falls above Alpine.
” [A hiker] found a phone showing a young woman walking in the river,” Cannon said.
“We are investigating what might have happened to that young woman. SAR and multiple fire agencies are involved in the investigation, including a DPS Helicopter.”
Cannon said the woman’s belongings and her dog were found around 3 p.m. on Friday. Sgt. Garrett Dutson with Utah County Sheriff’s Office said the dog was returned to the family of the woman who went missing.
The woman’s body was later found in the water on Friday night but couldn’t be recovered until Saturday due to safety concerns, according to Dutson.
Dutson said it looks like the 19-year-old got into the water, probably not realizing how fast it was, and got swept away.
“[The] water is super high and moving super-fast,” Dutson said.
Police believe her death was a “tragic accident” involving fast moving water and no foul play was involved.
Dutson said the cell phone content found on the woman’s phone is “still under investigation.”
