SALT LAKE CITY — Did you see them? The large tents set up in your grocery store parking lot? They’re a sure sign that fireworks season in Utah is back.

Indeed fireworks can now be sold across the state. However, they can’t be fired off just yet.

Utah law restricts fireworks until three days before and after the Fourth of July. The same is true for the Pioneer Day holiday, July 24.

State Fire Marshall Ted Black asks adults to use common sense when lighting bottle rockets and sparklers.

“Modifying fireworks is against the law,” Black told KSL NewsRadio. “Shooting them contrary to the instructions is against the law.”

Black had a few other suggestions for fireworks safety, too.

Have a garden hose available. Only adults light the fireworks.”

If you intend to light fireworks in Utah, you should only purchase them from local fireworks stands. Black said people caught using illegal fireworks can face serious penalties.

This is especially true if fire from illegal fireworks causes property damage.

“These are explosives. These are dangerous. They can cause serious injury and obviously be the ignition source for a serious fire. The last thing that you want is for the Fourth of July that you remember as the worst day of your life.”

Where can I light fireworks in Utah?

The best way to know where you may legally light fireworks is to contact your city or county fire authority. This list from the Department of Public Safety directs you to some of those authorities.

The DPS reminds you that fireworks are never allowed on U.S. Forest Service or BLM land, or in national parks.
