Utah voters share top-of-mind issues on primary election day

SALT LAKE CITY — Voters steadily filed into the Salt Lake County Government Center and other polling locations Tuesday morning to cast their vote statewide in the primary election and to share their concerns.
Some went inside to vote in person, while others dropped their ballots in the dropbox out front.
Some voters stopped to talk with KSL NewsRadio about why they came to vote and what issues were on their minds this primary election season.
The issues
Voter and Republican delegate Sarah Lay said some of the biggest issues on her mind were:
- Immigration
- Utah government spending
- Term limits
- “People that do what they say they’re going to do,” Lay said, referring to elected officials.
Wesley Sine said some issues he was most concerned about were:
- Immigration
- Taxes
- “Our situation on an international stage,” Sine said.
“I think it’d be nice to have somebody who cares about the environment.” said voter Sydney, who did not wish to share her last name.
Parker Davis said the governor’s race drove him to the polls.. He spoke in support of the current state leadership.
“I feel like we’re doing awesome as a state. We lead in a lot of different aspects . . . the economy is one of them,” Davis said.
The importance of voting
While voters’ opinions varied a bit, all were united on the front that it’s important to make sure everyone’s voice is heard
“It’s our right, and it’s something that we should exercise,” Davis said. “You’ve got to get out and vote.”
“I think it’s a great opportunity . . . we’re very lucky we live in a country where we have the right to vote,” Sine said. “Every vote counts . . . you’re doing what you ought to be doing.”
“I can’t tell you how important it is for each of us to actually be involved,” Lay said. “It is your civic duty; you live in the best country in the world.”
Polls and ballot drop boxes are open until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
