SALT LAKE CITY — The Fourth of July in Utah is expected to be one of the coolest on record in roughly five years, but forecasters expect the heat to return July 7 through July 11.
“It’s going to be a record-breaking high,” KSL meteorologist Kevin Eubank said. “St. George goes up to 114 [degrees Fahrenheit], their all-time record is 117. So, these are some really hot temperatures next week.”
On the Fourth of July, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the Western Uintah Basin, or, Duchesne, Uintah and Wasatch counties. The NWS says the warning means “critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or are imminent.” The warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday night.
The NWS says an excessive heat warning will be in effect from 9 a.m. on Sunday morning to 9 p.m. on Monday night for Glen Canyon Recreation Area/Lake Powell, Lower Washington County and Zion National Park.
Staying safe in the Utah heat
The National Weather Service said the potential for heat illnesses rise when temperatures rise. To stay safe:
- drink plenty of fluids,
- stay in an air-conditioned room,
- stay out of the sun, and
- do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles.
If planning on going outside, the NWS advises you to wear loose and lightweight clothing.
The National Weather Service also asks that you keep an eye on others and watch out for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
