Students from West Haven, Roy, and many of western Weber County’s communities will now be Mountain View Mavericks.
Lane Findlay with the Weber School District said the new school was met with a lot of excitement during back-to-school night last week.
“We had a very large crowd of excited parents and students to be able to start [at] the school,” said Findlay.
Mountain View is one of three new schools built by the district built to accommodate the county’s population growth. West Field High School and Haven Bay Elementary are also new schools this year.
“Those were built in response to development and growth and there’s a lot of that occurring and Weber County particularly out west and over the years has created some real issues with some overcrowding,” said Findlay.
However, Mountain View is the only one to open its doors to students for the district’s official first day of school. According to Findlay, recent inspections deemed the new Haven Bay Elementary building not ready for students.
“We’ve got to pivot to our contingency plan,” said Findlay. “And with the elementary school, that would be starting the school year at two of our surrounding elementary [schools].”
Haven Bay students will attend classes in portables located at Hooper and Kanesville elementary schools for the time being. The district hopes they will be able to get students onto the Haven Bay campus by Sept. 3. West Field High School is also projected to get onto their new campus by Sept. 3.
