5-year-old dies from an accidental gunshot wound in Santaquin, police say

SANTAQUIN, Utah – Santaquin Police say a 5-year-old is dead after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Santaquin Police said the child found a 9 mm handgun and handled it on his own. They are not sure how he got a hold of the gun and are investigating how it got discharged.

The shooting happened in a back bedroom. The parents were in the house but in a separate room. Police said a few other siblings live at the residence, but not all of them were home at the time.

The family performed life-saving measures, but the boy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The family is asking for privacy as they grieve.
