Recent Utah rain sends the state closer to average water levels

SALT LAKE CITY — Summer rain totals were looking scarce up until Utah’s most recent string of storms.

Michael Sanchez with the Utah Division of Water Resources said luckily, the state has now reached its goal of average water levels.

“Our soil moisture has taken a good rebound,” Sanchez said. “We’re really happy with that, happy with the storms, we really wish they would keep coming.”

Sanchez said on Aug. 11, Utah was at 26.2 inches of precipitation total for the summer. 

“We were definitely looking at, kind of, below average levels,” Sanchez said.

The recent summer rain brought the state up to 28.1 inches, which is about average.

Sanchez said these recent levels are important for Utah’s soul moisture, which affects the spring run-off.

According to Sanchez, Utahns still need to be mindful of water usage in order to keep the state in the average range. He said if there is rain, turn your sprinklers off and let Mother Nature take care of your yard.
