SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Hockey Club has kicked off its first rookie camp.
A group of recent draft picks and prospects gathered at the Delta Center on Sept. 11. Some were even hitting the ice and showing off their skills.
Utah Hockey Club Insider Cole Bagley said the players he spoke to were excited to see where this new chapter of Utah hockey goes.
Bagley said one player to watch for is defenseman and first-round draft selection Maveric Lamoureux.
“We saw his strength and his size put to the test today. He was moving guys in front of the net, doing really well in terms of protecting the puck behind the net and contributing offensively as well.”
He said Lamoureux is likely one of the only players with a chance to play for Utah’s new team this season.
“But it would be a situation where if somebody gets injured and they need to call him up, that would be the way that he puts on the Utah Hockey Club jersey this year. It wouldn’t be him making the opening day roster,” Bagley said.
Most of the rookies will end up on developmental teams. However, their goal is to prove themselves and make the big club.
The Utah Hockey Club rookie team will be traveling to play a faceoff tournament against prospects from the San Jose Sharks on Sept. 12. Fans can watch the tournament live for free on UtahHockeyClub.com.
