SALT LAKE CITY — Utah baseball fans are gearing up for an emotional farewell to Smith’s Ballpark this weekend as the Salt Lake Bees prepare to move to Daybreak next season.
Salt Lake Bees Communications Director Kraig Williams dedicated a decade of his career with the Bees. He has a deep-rooted connection to the ballpark, saying he remembers attending his first game there 30 years ago on opening day. He recently shared the memory with his 10-year-old daughter.
Earlier this week, Williams went to check out the new home of the Bees in Daybreak. He said some of the final steel beams were going in.
When asked if they have already started clearing their desks and packing up their belongings at Smith’s Ballpark, he said there’s no rush. They’ll get to it when they get to it.
“We’re not going to be prying chairs out on our way out on Sunday or anything like that… We’re taking some pictures off the wall.”
After the final game on Sunday, fans will have the opportunity to run the bases, capture photos, and even take home a vial of dirt from the field as a memento of the 30-year-long run of Smith’s Ballpark.
