West Jordan’s 8600 S. bridge opening delayed until early next year

WEST JORDAN, Utah — The 8600 S. bridge in West Jordan won’t open for several more months due to safety concerns.
It was supposed to open this past summer. However, John Gleason with the Utah Department of Transportation said problems arose during the final inspection.
“Our inspectors discovered hairline cracks in the cap of one support column.”
Gleason said they investigated the cause of the cracks and found that the original design was done incorrectly.
“We determined that the issue was a flaw with the original design. So that designer is assuming all costs associated with it.”
West Jordan residents have been excited about the bridge, which will cross over Mountain View Corridor on 8600 S. to help with their commutes. The project was already behind schedule and now commuters will have to wait even longer for the bridge to open up.
Gleason said he understands the residents’ frustration.
“It can be an inconvenience when you’re expecting a bridge in your area to open,” Gleason said. “But it has to be safe.”
UDOT does not have a new opening date for the bridge, but the city of West Jordan expects the project to be done by “early next year.”
