Utah Highway Patrol gives tips on road safety for a safe Halloween

SALT LAKE CITY — With a 43% higher risk of pedestrian deaths on Halloween night, Oct. 31 is statistically one of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrians. 

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden said parents should talk about road safety with their kids this Halloween.

“[Make] sure you’re in areas where it’s lighted and then people can see you. The more visible you are, the better,” Roden said. “And that’s why we encourage people to incorporate some type of reflective material in your costume if that’s possible.”

Roden also said many people will probably still be celebrating this weekend. He’s reminding people to not drive if they are under the influence.

The American Red Cross of Utah also gave the following tips for drivers on Halloween:

• Drive slow
• Avoid residential areas
• Make sure the area around you is clear at stop signs and take your time
• Stay focused while driving

RCU also listed tips on how kids can stay safe while trick-or-treating.

Those tips included advice on making sure kids walk and don’t run, cross roadways in a safe manner and make sure kids are using sidewalks. RCU advised parents to limit distractions around them.
