SALT LAKE CITY — SWAT teams arrested a man who had barricaded himself inside a Salt Lake City apartment with a woman he was holding against her will Thursday, according to police.

The man was identified as Michael Dayley, 40, who was arrested earlier in October for a similar incident at the same complex, police said.

Brent Weisberg, a spokesman for the Salt Lake City Police Department, said officers responded to a domestic violence call at an apartment complex on 1925 W. North Temple at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Weisberg said Dayley had entered the woman’s apartment who had a protective order against him. The two knew each other from a prior relationship. Dayley would not let her leave, and officers believed he may have had a weapon.

Officers arrived and tried communicating with Dayley and the woman inside.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the woman was able to climb out of the apartment safely using a ladder, police said. She was taken to a “secure area,” police said, where she was inspected for medical injuries. Police did not report she had any.

Dayley remained inside the apartment after he was asked several times to come out. Weisberg said SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived on the scene to help. At approximately 11 p.m., SWAT officers entered the apartment under a court-authorized search warrant they obtained and began to speak with Dayley directly.

He was taken into custody shortly after they entered and booked on charges of “aggravated kidnapping, violating a protective order, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, interfering with a police officer and intoxication,” police said.

For the previous incident in early October, Dayley had been booked on charges of robbery, unlawful detention, violating a protective order, assault, and interfering with a police officer after that incident. He was later released.
