DRAPER, Utah — You may have heard of adopting a pet or a highway, but have you heard of the Adopt a Storm Drain program?
On Oct. 29, the city of Draper launched its Adopt a Storm Drain program, and residents have lined up to claim a drain. Over 100 storm drains have already been adopted.
Storm Water Specialist for Draper City Colton Konesky said that the program is modeled after programs in other cities. It’s aimed at keeping the city’s storm drains clean.
“Calmative debris, trash, you know all the leaves. What this program is just you are looking at it about once a month. Or before and after storm events and you are just trying to clear the storm drain.”
Konesky also said that people have been having fun naming their drains.
“We’ve seen a couple of fun names. For example, we’ve seen names like ‘H2flow,’ ‘Drain in the Neck,’ ‘Drainy McDrain Face.”
However, the city does have veto power over any bad names.
Along with the funny names, a few traditional names also made the cut.
“We got just a couple of people who are naming them after their last name, family name, kind of make it like a family thing to do. But yeah, naming is part of the fun in this program,” said Konesky.
Konesky is hoping this is one program that won’t go down the drain.
