ADA COUNTY, Idaho — A county in Idaho is making all ballots public. The clerk says it’s an effort to be more transparent about the election process.
Nicole Camarda, Public Information Office with the Ada County Clerk’s office said the idea first came up after the 2020 election.
“We saw an influx of public record requests in our office and so the Ada County Clerk, Trent Tripple, and the Elections Director, Saul Seller, really wanted to get the information back to the people,” said Camarda.
If ballots are public, what about voter security?
Camarda wants to assure voters that ballots are not published with voters’ names and other personal information.
“There’s nothing that connects the voter to the ballot. We tell people and ensure people that they do have a right to a secret ballot and we want to maintain that of course.”
Where to find it?
The ballot verifier is accessible through the Ada County Clerk’s Office website. The verifier is interactive and public to everyone.
It is also possible to filter and sort by precinct and method of voting, so people can perform their own “audit.”
Camarda said they hope this transparency to helps build trust in the election process.
Right now, the verifier has ballots going back to 2022. It could take 4 to 6 weeks following an election for ballots to show on the site.
