MURRAY— The Murray City Council is expected to hear a proposal regarding short-term rentals. They plan to vote on it at Tuesday’s council meeting according to the agenda.
Zachary Smallwood, Murray City planning manager said the city currently doesn’t allow any short-term rentals, like Airbnb’s or Vrbo’s. Under the current city code, homeowners cannot even rent out their properties while away.
“We found…it can be a detractor towards people actually being able to have a home,” Smallwood said.
Smallwood will present a proposal that, if passed, would allow homeowners to rent out rooms or portions of their homes for short periods if the homeowner applies for a permit and is approved by the city.
Under the proposal, Smallwood said unlicensed rental owners would be subject to higher-level misdemeanor charges, which would also make it easier to enforce citywide.
Smallwood said there’s been an uptick in short-term rentals including those operating illegally. He hopes the proposal helps address it.
Smallwood said if the council votes to adopt the ordinance, he plans to present a progress report on it to the council in one year, and suggest any tweaks if necessary.
The council will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be streamed online for those who don’t wish to attend in person.
