MANHATTAN, New York — CNN reported that the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
Brian Thompson, 50, was walking toward the midtown New York Hilton for a conference that was being held at the hotel. He was shot in the chest at around 6:45 a.m.
The hotel is near tourist attractions like the Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Modern Art.
Investigators told CNN that the gunman had been waiting near the hotel for some time. When Thompson was 20 feet away, the shooter opened fire. Multiple shots rang out.
Thompson was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. NYPD said he was pronounced dead there, according to CNN.
CNBC reported that the incident appears to have been a targeted attack.
The shooter has been described as a white male. He allegedly wore a black hoodie, pants, and sneakers, and carried a grey backpack.
Following the shooting, UnitedHealthcare canceled their conference. According to a transcript published by CNBC, UnitedHealthcare staff told conference attendees the cancellation was due to a “very serious medical situation” with an employee.
UnitedHealthcare has not posted any information relating to the incident on its social media accounts.
