SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — Not sure what to do with your live Christmas tree after the holidays? Summit County officials are hoping people will drop off their Christmas trees to be re-purposed rather than sending them to a landfill.

Summit County Communication and Public engagement director Derek Siddoway said  they’ve been repurposing Christmas trees for over a decade. This year you can drop it off at one of five locations in the county to be re-purposed.

“What we try to do is provide a variety of locations across the county. So it’s easy and accessible for people to drop off their trees. So it connivent for anyone to drop their tree off rather than just sticking it out on the side of the road for the landfill,” said Siddoway.

Siddoway said it’s important people remember to take off the lights and any other decorations from the trees before dropping them off.

As for re-purposing Siddoway said there are multiple way to get more use out of the tree.

“Traditionally and what we do most often is we will chip the trees and use the chips. Our public works department uses the chips for things like erosion control, potentially landscaping. And We’re also exploring some other uses for the chipped Christmas trees,” said Siddoway.

The locations are in Jeremy Ranch, Silver Creek, Oakley, Kamas, and Wanship.

Siddoway said you can drop off live Christmas trees at one of these locations in Summit County between December 27th and January 13th.
